Our oenologists' opinion

Deep garnet colour with a brilliant sheen. Frank and open nose of roasted wood, smoky notes, hint of cocoa, grilled pepper. Good balance on a medium body, quite warm, supple, ripe tannins. Roasted character, a touch of animal. Warm and already melted finish.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Domain and appellation

  • CHÂTEAU SMITH HAUT LAFITTE

This unique working philosophy of the Château combines innovative viticulture and vinification techniques with the utmost respect for living organisms: both the earth and the vines. This approach favours biodiversity and the balance of the vineyard's ecosystem by planting hedges, natural grassing, making organic compost and ploughing with horses. It also aims to maintain the genetic diversity of the vines and therefore the complexity of the wines thanks to massal selection and rootstock mother vines on the island of La Lande.
