Our oenologists' opinion

Powerful bouquet

Black in colour.

A straightforward nose with aromas of spice and liquorice, accompanied by notes of mocha and roasted black fruit.

On the palate, a full-bodied attack with good body and balance.

Clean, long finish, characterised by bitter cocoa, with good balance and persistence.

Round, silky tannins. Clean finish with good persistence.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Domain and appellation

  • CHÂTEAU CHEVAL NOIR

Established in 1895, Cheval Noir is one of the oldest estates in Saint-Émilion. Acquired in 1937, Château Cheval Noir is the first property owned by the Mä hler-Besse family. Located just a stone's throw from some of the finest estates in Saint-Émilion, Château Cheval Noir benefits from invaluable advice in the creation of exceptional wines. For several years now, Hubert de Boüard, oenologist and co-owner of Château Angélus, 1er Grand Cru Classé, a neighbour of Cheval Noir, has been contributing his knowledge and expertise to the development and vinification of Cheval Noir wines. The vines at Château Cheval Noir are predominantly planted with Merlot. They were planted over 50 years ago on siliceous soils over ferric crasse. This 5-hectare terroir, located next to Angélus, combined with the cultivation method, produces fine, well-balanced wines.
