ALPHONE MELLOT
SANCERRE is, above all, a hill that rises, solitary, amid a peaceful landscape bathed in the soft, golden light of the Loire.
Built in an amphitheatre on the southwest slope of the hill, the old town, at 312 metres high, overlooks the landscape and offers an admirable view.
The foundation of Sancerre is debated. Some historians attribute it to Julius Caesar, others to a Saxon colony that settled during the reign of Charlemagne. However, it is certain that it dates back to the early Middle Ages, before the year 1000, and that a castle was built on this prime location.
From the 16th century, specifically 1513, local archives mention the MELLOT family. They were already living by the regular rhythm of vines and producing quality wine.
