Our oenologists' opinion

Dark garnet colour with a few brick tints. Open nose of prunes in brandy, blackcurrant syrup, animal notes of fur. Good balance on a full-bodied, robust wine with a hint of warmth. A character that extends the aromas of the nose, with a hint of toast and roasting, ripe tannins that are fairly enveloped, and good length in the wine.

Features

Body ? The body is the way a wine feels inside the mouth. Several factors, such as the alcohol content and the presence of tannins, contribute to the feel of the wine.

Freshness ? The freshness of a wine is defined by its level of acidity. Unlike rounded wines, fresh wines are easy to drink, and are more lively. Acidity plays a necessary part in a wine's structure.

Aging ? All wines do not have the same aging potential. Some are supposed to be consumed at a young age while others must be kept for longer periods of time.

Tannins ? Coming from stems, grape pips and their storage barrels, the tannin gives structure to red wines only.

Domain and appellation

  • CHÂTEAU TROTANOY

This illustrious cru, whose name meant "trop anoi" or "trop ennuie" (when working the land) in old French, is situated on one of the best exposed parts of the famous Pomerol plateau and was acquired in 1953 by the Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, who have been operating it ever since. The mix of soils - half gravel on clay and half deep black clay - on a bed of iron dross gives the wine both power and depth as well as great complexity. The vineyard, partly spared by the dramatic frosts of 1956, has an average age of 35 years. It is cultivated in the traditional way (regular ploughing, thinning, leaf removal) and harvested ideally in two or three afternoons. Fermentation takes place in cement vats and the young wine is then matured in oak barrels, half of which are renewed each vintage.
